Kolhapur is an inland city located in south-west Maharashtra state, 373 km south of Mumbai & 228 km south of Pune, 615 km north-west of Bengaluru and 530 km west of Hyderabad.Kolhapur has an elevation of 569 metres (1867 ft). It lies in the Sahayadri mountains in the Western Ghats.[10] Chandgad is the coolest place in the Kolhapur district

There are many popular tourist destinations in Kolhapur liek Amba Devi Temple, Jotiba Temple, Panhala Fort, Gaganbawda, Kaneri Math, Rankala and many such places.But here are some places which are untouched hidden in the lap of nature and every explorer would love to visit .

 Radhanagari Taluka

1) Siddhagiri Maharaj Math

Located inside Dajipur fores,t its a place covered by dense vegetation and about 2 km from village called Digas. The locals are aware of this place and can guide you. Kalidas maharaj is in charge of this Math and there are 2-3 houses of the sevaks near the math. Kalidas Maharaj is a very freindly person and you can meet him to get more insights about this place and the history of Math.
This place is very calm , quiet and soothing. There is one Dhramashala here but same can be availed only with prior permission of Managament. This math is under close supervision of Gagangiri Maharaj Math at Gaganbawda and Shri Sanjay Dada Patankar (Main Incharge here)  can also guide you about this Math located in Radhanagari ,in case if you happen to first visit Gaganbawda math. 


How to Reach: Reach at Kasba Tarale which is 43 Km from Kolhapur via Rashiwade Budruk. From Kasba Tarale you can easily get directions for this place .However you need to take prior permission from Forest Dept at Dajipur forest Booking Office before entering this place since its a reserve forest.

2) Fireflies Festival (Kajva Mahostsav)
The Radhangari-based Bison Nature Club orgnises Kajva Prakash Utsav or Fireflies Festival  during last week of May at Radhanagari 45km to the southwest of the city.

This one-of-a-kind festival is usually scheduled on moonless nights and lacs of twinkling fireflies illuminate the forest like light bulb series of Diwali. Fireflies have a very short life and usually are found after 1st rain shower during May month end or June 1st Week 

Volunteers and sufficient banner are there on site to guide you once you reach near Gaibi from Radhanagari. Mind you these sparkling Fireflies cant be captured in our mobile cameras and need prefessional Cameras to capture the awesome Phenomenon.This Mahotsav usually lasts for 8-10 days depending upon the climate.

3) Butterfly Festival
Nestled in lap of Western Ghats, Radhanagari is home to 135 butterfly varieties including the recently acknowledged state butterfly - The Blue Mormon.
The Festival is organised by Bison Nature Club usually in month of November OR December. 4) Dajipur Bison Sanctuary
Dajipur is situated on the border of Kolhapur and Sindhudurg districts. Rugged mountains and dense forests surround this hilly area. Dajipur is home to bison, wild deer, chital, gawa and many more spectacular wild animals and birds. Situating at 1200 metres above the sea level and area covered being 351.16 Sq km, it is an exciting and beautiful holiday getaway. 

An excursion in the vicinity to the Gagangiri Maharaj's Math as mentioned above makes a pleasant outing for the tourists. This scenic resort near the backwaters of the Radhanagari Dam is highly recommended for wildlife lovers and nature enthusiasts. It is 80 km away from Kolhapur.

5) Radhanagari Dam
Its is a gravity dam on Bhogawati river near Radhanagari in State of Maharashtra in India.Dam construction was initiated by visionary Rajarshi Shahu on18 February 1907. Dam is being used for irrigation as well as hydro-electricity power generation. 
The dam is known for the technology of its kind, used for the dam, i.e. the gates of the Dam open automatically depending on water pressure. Now a days the irrigation dept authorities do take some nominal entry fees and Photography is Strictly prohibited here.

How to Reach: Buses are available from Kolhapur till Radhanagari and distance from Kolhapur is 57 Km.

Best Time to Visit: All round the year but visit during monsoon is advisable since dam is full with water and area is lush green.

6) Kalammawadi Dam
Kalammawadi Dam, is a gravity dam on Dudhaganga river near Radhanagari in the State of Maharashtra, India. It is the biggest dam in Kolhapur District. 
The dam was built on Dudhaganga river, which is located in and  it was inaugurated by Indira Gandhi. Water storage capacity of  dam is 28 Thousand Million Cubic(TMC).Power generation house has three electric generators in good working conditions beneath the dam. The height of the dam above lowest foundation is 73.08 m (239.8 ft) while the length is 1,280 m (4,200 ft).

How to Reach: 57 Km from Kolhapur . Route is Kolhapur- Devale- Kothali- Kurukali- BHogawati- Ghotawade- Gudal- Kalammawadi

Best Time to Visit: Preferably during monsoons since the entire area is lush green.

7) Raut Wadi Waterfall
Located at 60 Km from Kolhapur , this is a great place for a one day trip but only during the rainy season. Surrounded by lush green covers,the area around the waterfall has good pucca access road and changing rooms for ladies on paid basis are also available during peak rainy season through locals.
There are also some tea, corn , Chat, Maggi vendors near the entrance of Waterfall. Its a great place for a Photography enthusiast due to lush green dense forest in this place.It's an experience that lasts a lifetime.

8) Ramnawadi Waterfall
This is a awesome waterfall situate at Ramnawadi Village of Radhanagari and is not so popular destination as of now. Hence during peak monsson season you may not found this place overcrowded and can enjoy nature at its best .

                      Shahuwadi Taluka

1) Vishalgad Fort
Vishalgad fort, is also called ‘Khelna’ or ‘Khilna’ by locals, and was one of the important forts of the Maratha empire. The name ‘Vishalgad’ means grand fort in Marathi, the name was given by  Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj after annexing it during 1659. The structure covers an area of 1130 m and was built on a hilltop in the Sahyadri mountain ranges at a height of 3500 feet above sea level,
 and is about 76 km north – west of Kolhapur

How to Reach: 76 Km from Kolhapur. Kolhapur- Malkapur- Vishalgad. People coming from Mumbai or Pune side can also come via Karad- Jakhionwadi- Ghogaon- Kokrud- Malkapur- Vishalgad. The fort is 33 km for Malkapur. 

Best Time to Visit: Any time of Year but the place is lush green during Monsoons. Entry is free and its better to take a guide so that we understand the history of fort and its importance in Maratha Empire.

2) Pawankhind 
Battle of pawankhind was fought between Great Maratha Warrior Bajiprabhu Deshpanse and Siddhi Jauhar of Adilshah Sultanat. Its a very narrow valley where Bajiprabhu held the Adilshahi forces and bravely fought the battle for his Raja Shivaji Maharaj. 

How to Reach: 66 Km from Kolhapur via Bambavade- Gogave- Malkapur- Pawankhind.

3) Waghzara

Its a small water body 13 Km from Pawankhind and 79 Km from Kolhapur. It has lush green dense canopy with a water body and it is belived that wild aminals visit this place for drinking water.  You may visit thi place along with Pawankhind and Vishalgad since all 3 are located on same route.Please visit these places during day time since its dense forest with very sparce population and remote location full of wild aminals.

How to Reach: 81 Km from Kolhapur via Bambavade- Gogave- Malkapur- Pawankhind- Vishalgad- Waghzara. 
In case you want to directly go to Waghzara by bypassing vishalgad and Pawankhid go via Kolhapur- Gogave- Shahuwadi- Nile- Chandoli- talawade- Amba- Masnoli- Waghzara.

4) Barki Waterfalls
This awesome water fall hidden deep inside dense forest is nature lovers delight and falls from height of 150 Ft unobstructed. 43 Km from Kolhapur via Kale village on the way to Anuskura Ghat we have to stop at Karanjfen to visit this site. One has to trek for 4 km through dense forest and rich flora and fauna to see this water fall. Leeches are in plenty to welcome you so beware.In case you give up on trek midway , you can also enjoy in the downstream water of fall and have fun. One has to parkk vehicles 4 km away near village and there are some vendors for tea and snacks here, but after this no vendor is found so keep good stock of snacks as well.

How to Reach: 54 Km from Kolhapur. Travel from Kolhapur- Koparde- Kale- Katebhogaon- Bazaar Bhogaon- Pohale turf Borgaon-  Karanjfen. Its single state highway from Kolhapur to Kale village and then a small village road but in good condition.

Best time to Visit: Only during monsoon season and be prepared to trek through forest for approx 4 km

5) Anuskura Ghat
This is a awesome ghat just after Karanjfen village and is lush green during monsoons . Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj used to enter Konkan towards Rajapur using this route and Ugawai Devi Temple is located here. 17 Km from karanjfen. You can easily visit this place after or before Barki Water fall as its on same route.

How to Reach: 64 Km from Kolhapur. Travel from Kolhapur- Koparde- Kale- Katebhogaon- Bazaar Bhogaon- Pohale turf Borgaon-  Karanjfen. Its single state highway from Kolhapur to Kale village and then a small village road but in good condition

6) Manoli Waterfall
It is a wonderful and safe waterfall about 4.2 km from Amba village. Place is awesome for family outing.

How to Reach: 69 Km from Kolhapur via Devale- Gogave- Shauwadi- Nile- Chandoli- Amba- Manoli

7) Kasari Dam
This dam is located in Gelawade dam of Shahuwadi and also has Hydro Electric power plant.
Its a awesome place to visit during monsoons.

8) Ambeshwar Temple and Amba Ghat

Its a ancient Shiv temple located jusr 1.4 km from Amba Village and is covered by lush green vegetation. Must visait place Its believed that Amba village derieved its name from this ancient Shiv Temple.
Amba Ghat is every nature lovers delight during monsoon and there are plenty of small waterfalls on the way to enjoy. Stop at any water fall but ensure your vehicle doesnot obstruct the Ghat road since its foggy, wet and dangerous during rains.
You can get a superb view of Konkan area from top of Ghat and there are many snacks and tea vendors on the way to make your travel more fun.

9) Kerle Waterfall

Chandgad Taluka


1) Fort Paargad
Paargad is situated to the south of Kolhapur, which is 28 km from Chandgad. This place is a peaceful and greenery area.The scenery of the fort is so charming with its dense forest. The fort has an exquisite bronze statue of Shivaji and a temple of Bhagawati Bhawani.

How to Reach: 143 km from Kolhapur via Kagal- Nippani- Tavadi-  Gadhinglaj- Nesari- Paargad

2) Fort Kalanidhigad and Jangamhatti  Dam

This fort is located at height of  1015 mt from sea level. Fort offers a 360 degree panoramic view of Tambrapani Rviver and Tillari River .
Jangamhatti  dam is constructed on Honal River and a awesome place near fort.

3) Fort Gandharvagad
This fort is located at height of  916 mt from sea level. Fort is 1 hr walking distance from Valukili Village located at base of fort and there are temples of Lord Hanuman and Chaloba Temple. Currently condition of this fort is not so good but the location offers good view.

How to Reach: 109 km from Kolhapur via Kagal- Nippani- Tavadi-  Gadhinglaj- Mahagaon- Satawane- naganwadi- Kurtanwadi- Gandharvagad

4) Fort Mahipalgad

One can either drive vehicle till the fort or hike directly to the fort from Dewarwadi town. By road we first reach the Vaijnath temple and has Nandi in front of the temple. On the way to the fort, there is rock cut caves known as Mahipalgad caves. There is a grand statue of Shivaji Maharaj near the main entrance. The fort is currently not in very good shape.

How to Reach: 126 km  from Kolhapur via Kagal- Nippani- Sankeshwar- Gotur- Hallbhavi- Mutenatti- Hindalga- Shinoli- Devarwadi- Mahilpalgad.

5) Tillari Dam
Its a huge Dam on Tillari River and has a height of 124 ft , length of 1591 ft and used for Hydro Electric Power Generation

6) Swapnawel Point and Waterfall

This place is located at around 11 km from Tillari nagar and nominal entry fees is charged to visit this fall. Visit during morning is good since later crowd starts building thereby creating chaos and traffic jams. Just 52 Km from Belgaum and falls in state of Maharashtra.

7) Nangartaas Waterfall
This waterfall is located at 10 Km from Amboli and is situated behind Nagartas temple. The height of falls is around 250 ft and special viewing deck is available to enjoy the view. Monsoon are best to view this mighty fall.

Panhala Taluka

1) Masai Pathar along wih Panhala Fort:

This plateau is situted at 900mt above sea level and is 1.5 Sq km wide. Season wild flower blossom here during Aug- September and give this place a magical feel. 

How to Reach:28 km from kolhpur via Kerle- Budhwarpeth- Masai Pathar

Best Time to Visit: All the year but Aug and Sep is good to see wid flower blossoming.


Hatkanangale Taluka

1) Bahubali Hill Temple
One can see a mammoth idol of Lord Bahubali, on a hilltop in the resplendent city of Kolhapur. . Installed in the year 1963, you can see Lord Bahubali in a standing position, for that you may have to
take the staircase of 70 steps in order to view the deity. Another temple is constructed in shape of Ship and is really awesome.

You can also find many Jain temples alongside after coming down on the right side you have Mahaveer Digmabar Jain ‘Jal Mandir’ temple and on the left, you have ‘Ratnatrya’ Digambar Jain temple. Classes take place all year-round in the Swadhyay Bhavan where more than one thousand students study in the Gurukul under Bahubali University.

How to Reach: 31 km from Kolhapur via Sangli Fata- Chokak- Hatkanangale- Kumbhoj

Best Time to Visit: Any time of year is good. Plz note that desent clothing is must here and no Half pants/ shorts allowed.



2) Ramling Temple
This is a awesome cave temple and it is said that lord Ram stay here during his Vanvas. The is small shivling in Cave and water drops on the ling through out the year and even during summers. Must vist place located on a hill. There are also many small temples nearby .

Gaganbawda Taluka

1) Palsambe
While going from Kolhapur to Gaganbawda , this is a place just 5-6 km before Gaganbawda on right side of road. It has got Monolithic caves amidst a water stream . During Monssons the small water orignates from here and small monolithic temples are submerged in water. Such a awesome place with lush dense forest nearby and sahyadri ranges on sides. Its is belief that pandavas did their Tapaschrya in these caves during their Vanvaas. Also one cave is found here with Ganesha Idol and Shivling idol. Different types of frogs and other creature take shelter in this caves .

How to Reach: 51 Km from Kollhapur via Sablewadi- Kuditre- Asagaon- Nivade- Asalaj- Palsambe 

Best Time to Visit: Any time of year but especially in monssons.


2) Morjai
This is a HIghland plateau and has Morjai Devi Temple at other far end of plateau. The caves itself is huge and amazing with idol of Goddess Morjai and form other end of cave its a deep valley and one can get glorious view of Dajipur Forest.
Many wild animals like Sambar, Gaur, Barking Deer, Bison are found here occasionally. There is a small hut near this temple but its mostly used by locals during the annual yatra. A local  Pujari Named MR Gurav hikes here twice a day for lighting lamp and cleaning temple. During monsoon wild flowers blossom here and people also called it "Kass" of Kolhapur.

How to Reach: 61 km from Kolhapur and  8 km from Gaganbawda. From Kolhapur via Sablewadi- Kuditre- Asagaon- Nivade- Asalaj- Borbet village - Morjai. You need to park your vehicle at Borbet and the climb stairs across the plateaus . Walk about 1 km on plateau to visit Morjai Temple on other end of Plateau.

3) Veseraf Check Dam 

This is a small check dam located in Vesaraf Village and good for fishing and Bird Watching. Fishing can be enjoyed along with local people.

4) DY Patil Sugar Factory
This factory is located on the way from Kolhapur to Gaganbawda at Vesaraf and if you are lucky during season you may get to visit this factory and watch actula sugar making.Its right on the Highway.

How to Reach: 49 Km from KOlhapur just before Gaganbawda via Sablewadi- Kuditre- Asagaon- Nivade- Asalaj-Vesaraf- Sugar Factory

Best Time to Visit: During period of Sugarcane harvesting from Nov to Jan 

5) Andur Dam
This small dam is located at Andur Village and good place to hang anf enjoy the nature, Bird and calm water

6) Kode Dam

This dam is located in Kode village at 20 km from Gaganbawda. Its surrounded by dense natural forest and we can enjoy a day here with familky and friends.

7) Lakhmapur Dam
On the way to Morjai from gaganbawda qwe can also visit this awesome Dam located in lush grre forest. The capacity of this Dam is 1.6 TMC and one unit of Hydro power plant is installed here.

How to Reach: 61 km from Kolhapur and   km from Gaganbawda. From Kolhapur via Sablewadi- Kuditre- Asagaon- Nivade- Asalaj- Borbet village 

Best Time to Visit: All round the year especially in Monsoon


8) Karul Ghat 


Its most scenic Ghats in Sahyadris and starts from left side of Gaganbawda Bus Stand and ends at Vaibhavwadi down the hill. Its approx 11 Km in length . Road goes to Talere and meets NH 17 - Mumbai Goa Highway. This ghat is awesome in Rainy season with lot of small streams flowing from top and creating waterfalls on the way. Stop at any place on the way by parking your vehicle safely and enjoy the waterfall.

How to Reach: This Ghat starts from left side Gaganbawda Bus Stand and goes towards Vaibhavwadi which is in Sindhudurg District . Its 57 km from Kolhapur. 

Best Time to Visit: During monsoon its a treat to travel on this road 


9) Bhuibawda Ghat
Its most scenic Ghats with lush green vegetation on the way and starts from right side of Gaganbawda Bus Stand and ends at Rajapur village in Ratnagiri District. Its approx 10 Km in length . Road further goes to KharePatan town. This ghat is awesome in Rainy season with lot of small streams flowing from top and creating waterfalls on the way. Stop at any place on the way by parking your vehicle safely and enjoy the waterfall.

How to Reach: This Ghat starts from right side of Gaganbawda Bus Stand and goes towards Rajapur which is in Ratnagiri District . Its 57 km from Kolhapur. 

Best Time to Visit: During monsoon its a treat to travel on this road 


Shirol Taluka

1) Kopeshwar Temple
The ancient Kopeshwar Temple at Khidrapur in Kolhapur District is dedicated to Lord Shiva and rests on the bank of River Krishna. This temple has 48 pillars and each has been specifically carved in different shapes -round, square, hexagon, and octagon. Yet another interesting feature of the Swarga Mandap is that a part of the circular ceiling in the middle (with a radius of 13-feet) is left open to the sky.This temple is also called as Kopeshwar Temple.

2) Narsobawadi

Narasimha Wadi is at a distance of 45 km from Kolhapur. Situating on the banks of rivers Krishna and Panchaganga. This place famous for holy padukas or slippers of Dattaguru (an incarnation of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh). Its yatra time here during Datta Jayanti. According to legend, this temple was built by a Muslim King, Adil Shah of Bijapur district.The story is very intresting and can be found on intrenet. Place is serene and one feels like sitting on banks of river for long time. These days many crocodiles have been reported in Krishna River hence beware while stepping in river water.

How to Reach:  52 Km from Kolhapur via Sangli fata- Herle- Chokak- Atigre- Hatkanangale- Jayshingpur- Shirol- Narsobawadi

Bhudargad Taluka

1) Budargad Fort

Bhudargad fort is located about 50 km south of Kolhapur. This fort is situated on a huge vertical rock amidst mountain ranges.It is said to resemble from a distance, the crescent moon in the matted hair of the god Shiva.

3) Fort Rangana
This grand fort was built by Raja Bhoj and later went to Adilshah and finnaly was captured by Shivaji Maharaj.its situated on hill amidst dense forest and is located at 2600ft above sea level. Ranganai temple and beautiful perinial lake are good locations on the fort worth visiting.

4) Patgaon Dam

Patgaon is known for Samadhi of Shree Mouni Maharaj . He was guru of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
Patgaon dam is near Patgaon village and is built on Vedganga River.Its a beautiful place to visit with Family.

5)Mouni Maharaj Math
Thi sis historic monument and samadhi of Mouni Maharaj is located here. He was Guru of Chatrapati Shivaji maharaj. Chatrapati Shahu Maharaj and Tararani used to visit this place historically. There is MOuni Maharaj University in Gargoti which can also be visited.

Kagal Taluka

1) Shree Chatrapati Shahu Sakhar Karkhana (Sugar Mill) 
This mill is located in Kagal and Shri Vikramsingh Ghatge constructed mill in 1980. The mill manufactures spirit and electricity along with Sugar .Has capacity to crush 4500 MT of cane per day.

Ajara Taluka

1) Ramtirth Water falls
This water fall is located on Hiranykeshi River and is located at Ajara Taluka of Kolhapur District.

How to Reach: Its just 2 Km from Ajara town and buses till Ajara or Via Ajara are easily availble from Goa , Sawantwadi, Kolhapur

Best time to Visit: Although its a perenial waterfall but still it best enjoyed during monsoon season from July to NOv


2) Chitri Dam
Its a earthen dam located on Chitri river at Ajara and capacity is 625 Cu mi.This place is awesome and fishing can be done here .

3) Cashew Plantationand Ghansal Rice Farms
If you are lucky and talk to some villager , they are willing to take you for visit to their Cashew Plantation and there are many cashew processing plants as well in Ajara.
You may also visit Ghansal Rice farms since Ghansal is famous rice  variety produced here and has good fragrance. You may also buy Ghansal Rice at low rates here.


4) Shirsingi Sacred Tree
Shirsingi is a sacred tree spaning in area of 1.75 Acre and was also shot in famous Marathi movis "Jogva"

Its only 10km from Ajara City

5Pernoli Plateau
Pernoli is Village located 14 km form Ajara city and has a flat plateau spaning across few kilometres. Its famous for blossom of wild flowers during Sep to November.

Gadhinglaj Taluka

1) Samangad Fort
This fort is located at 2600 ft above sea level and on hill top . The hill on which is constructed is oval in shape thereby giving a unique dimension to fort as well. Main Attractio here is place called Bhui Bhangara which means land with Crack. One has to go down the stairs to visit a Shiva Temple below ground level in rock crevice.

Karveer Taluka


1) Temblai Devi Mandir
Its located near Kolhapur city and 1.5 km from Rajarampuri . Located on hill , there are 2 temples - bigger one is of Temblai Devi and small one is of Yamai Devi. Good place to visit when one is in Kolhapur city and wants to go for nearby places . During Sharavan month of Hindu Calender there is huge Yatra in this temple.

How to Reach : 1.5 Km from Rajarampuri area of Kolhapur

2) Other common tourist attractions well known and frequently visited in Karveer are Mahalaxmi Mandir, New Palace, Rankala, Kaneri Math, Jyotiba Temple.
